________________________________________ In a training programme that is the first of its kind in Syria, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) participated in a specialized psychiatric nursing programme for 32 participants, as part of efforts to enhancing the efficiency of medical and nursing staff to ensure sustainable return and reintegration, and strengthen specialized mental health services and help address the gap in psychiatric nursing in the country. The training was conducted in collaboration with Shafak Organization, the World Health Organization (WHO), and Americares, and was hosted by Ibn Khaldoun Psychiatric Hospital in Aleppo. IOM’s participation was part of the Sustainable Solutions project, funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), through the integration of IOM’s Community-Based Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (Community-Based MHPSS) approach into the training. This helps strengthen the role of psychiatric nurses as a link between specialized mental health services and the community. Investing in psychiatric nursing personnel is a key pathway towards building more sustainable mental health services by strengthening the integration of specialized care and community support, while supporting longer-term recovery pathways.

--------------------------------------- In the context of commemorating the chemical attack in Zamalka, and its deep and lasting human and psychological impact on many families and the community, 24 women took part in an expressive session held a few days ago, delivered by IOM, in coordination with Zamalka Municipality. The session provided a safe space to talk about grief, loss and memories, express emotions, and learn about some signs of depression, ways to seek help and available support. IOM’s Community-Based Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) approach recognizes that experiences of collective loss affect not only individuals, but also the community’s memory, sense of safety and social ties. The approach therefore focuses on supporting people within their social and cultural context and drawing on community connections and spaces for expression and mutual support, contributing to community-based recovery and resilience priorities and strengthening communities’ capacity to recover and move forward. The aim was not to move beyond the memory, but to create an opportunity to acknowledge and share the pain, while strengthening sources of support, belonging and resilience within the community. Recovery from collective loss does not happen in isolation, but also through a sense of belonging, mutual support and the ability to hold space for one another and move forward.

I am honoured to announce that I have taken up my new assignment as Chief of Mission for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Syria - a country whose people have endured profound challenges. My first field visit took me to Darayya in Rural Damascus, where the scale of destruction was stark. Yet what stood out most was the resilience and determination of Syrians to rebuild their lives and communities and shape a more prosperous future. That resilience will be my compass throughout this assignment. I look forward to working closely with the Government of Syria, our #UN partners, donors and communities across the country to support recovery and help create the conditions for safe, voluntary, dignified and sustainable returns across #Syria IOM - UN Migration IOM Syria
