About us

IOM has a presence in Georgia since 1993, providing a comprehensive response to the humanitarian needs of migrants, internally displaced persons, returnees, and host communities throughout the country. IOM has worked on various migration-related priority areas over the years ranging from emergency and post-crisis response, immigration and border management, prevention and fight against human trafficking and smuggling, migrant protection and assistance, migrant health, labour migration and human development. IOM has supported migration policy development and research and provided capacity-building for all government structures and civil society organizations that have a role to play in migration management. IOM operates through the central office in Tbilisi and four field offices in Batumi, Kutaisi, Poti, and Telavi.

    📢 New joint factsheet: IOM - UN Migration, UNICEF Europe & Central Asia and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency have released the 2025 Overview of Trends on Migrant and Refugee Children via Mixed Migration Routes in Europe. In 2025, around 31,100 children were recorded arriving in Europe. More than two-thirds, approximately 20,800 children (67%), were unaccompanied. Behind the numbers are children and young people navigating complex journeys, often facing significant protection risks and challenges, including violence, exploitation, lack of shelter and food, health concerns, and financial difficulties.     This week, #IOMGeorgia brought together representatives of seven #municipalities to review and refine initial investment ideas aimed at strengthening local economies, creating employment opportunities, and supporting the #sustainable #reintegration of returning migrants. Implemented with the support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (#SDC), the R-EMPOWER programme continues to work with municipalities and local stakeholders to foster economic opportunities that contribute to sustainable reintegration and inclusive local growth. *** სამიზნე მუნიციპალიტეტებთან გამართულ სამუშაო შეხვედრაზე, რომელიც შვეიცარიის განვითარებისა და თანამშრომლობის სააგენტოს მხარდაჭერით გაიმართა, ვიმსჯელეთ მუნიციპალიტეტების საჭიროებებზე, განვითარების შესაძლებლობებსა და იმ საინვესტიციო მიმართულებებზე, რომლებმაც შეიძლება ხელი შეუწყოს როგორც დაბრუნებული მიგრანტების, ისე ადგილობრივი თემების კეთილდღეობას. ლაგოდეხის, ბაღდათის, ხონის, ფოთის, ხობის, სენაკისა და ოზურგეთის მუნიციპალიტეტების წარმომადგენლებთან ერთად განვიხილეთ საინვესტიციო იდეები, რომლებიც ადგილობრივი ეკონომიკის გაძლიერებას, სამუშაო ადგილების შექმნასა და დაბრუნებული მიგრანტების რეინტეგრაციის მხარდაჭერას ისახავს მიზნად.

    How can local partnerships better support the reintegration of returnees? #IOMGeorgia brought together municipalities and local #stakeholders to present the findings of a mapping exercise covering 17 municipalities across #Georgia and to discuss opportunities for stronger cooperation. Key recommendations focused on strengthening coordination, improving access to information and services, and building sustainable local support systems for returning migrants. Participants agreed that #reintegration is strongest when municipalities, service providers, and communities work #together. This week, #IOMGeorgia brought together representatives of government institutions and the private sector to discuss current migrant recruitment practices, identify challenges, and highlight good practices. The insights gathered will contribute to the development of ethical recruitment standards, practical guidance, and capacity-building activities for employers and private employment agencies. This initiative is implemented within the framework of the #Sweden-funded project - Building Resilient Futures for Migration-Prone Populations in Georgia (REforM). *** საქართველოში იმიგრანტთა დასაქმების პრაქტიკის უკეთ შესწავლის მიზნით, შევხვდით სახელმწიფო უწყებებისა და კერძო სექტორის წარმომადგენლებს, რათა შევაფასოთ რეკრუტირების სფეროში არსებული მდგომარეობა, ძირითადი გამოწვევები და გამოვავლინოთ კარგი პრაქტიკის მაგალითები. კვლევის შედეგები ხელს შეუწყობს პრაქტიკული ინსტრუმენტებისა და სტანდარტების შემუშავებას, რომლებიც გააძლიერებს სამართლიან, გამჭვირვალე და ინფორმირებულ დასაქმების პროცესებს როგორც მიგრანტებისთვის, ისე დამსაქმებლებისთვის. შეხვედრა გაიმართა შვედეთის მიერ დაფინანსებული პროექტის -„მდგრადი მომავლის შექმნა მიგრაციული განწყობის მქონე მოსახლებისთვის (REforM)“- ფარგლებში.

    Climate change and environmental hazards continue to affect lives and livelihoods across #Georgia, particularly in communities exposed to landslides, mudflows and other natural hazards. #IOMGeorgia brought together local authorities, public agencies, civil society organizations, researchers, experts and development partners to discuss findings from a new study on ecomigration in Georgia, conducted under the #REforM project funded by Sweden.     Employers' voices matter when designing skills programmes that lead to jobs. This week, #IOMGeorgia met with representatives from the transport and logistics, agribusiness, and construction sectors to validate the findings of a #labour #market assessment that will help shape future #vocational training opportunities for migration-prone populations, including returning migrants, eco-migrants, and internally displaced persons.     IOM Georgia Chief of Mission Lars Johan Lönnback met with Ms. Louise Chamberlain, Deputy Executive Coordinator of UNV, to discuss opportunities for strengthening collaboration between #IOM and #UNV. Drawing on IOM Georgia's positive experience of hosting a UN Volunteer, the discussion explored opportunities to expand #volunteer engagement in migration, community resilience and disaster management. Volunteers play a vital role in supporting communities and advancing sustainable development.
