What if better data quality could help frontline health workers act before data problems become problems for patients? We're following up on what's happened since #UNOpenSourceWeek2026, and today we’re highlighting the Data Observation Toolkit (DOT) - an open-source, certified Digital Public Good developed by DataKind to help organizations identify and address problems with data quality and integrity. In Uganda, DOT was integrated into the Ministry of Health’s electronic Community Health Information System across two districts serving more than 684,000 people. It automatically checked 5.3 million data rows, surfacing issues including nearly 8,000 pregnancies with fewer than four antenatal care visits that could be flagged for follow-up. In Lesotho, DOT helped Riders for Health automate quality checks across specimen-transport data serving 2.2 million people. And with GaVi and partners, DOT has also been prototyped on global immunization datasets to identify anomalies and support more reliable vaccine data. These applications point to something broader: data-quality challenges are not unique to one health system, platform or country. DOT contributes to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, while its platform-agnostic approach offers potential for broader public-interest applications where trustworthy data is essential for decision-making and service delivery. 110 participants. 22 teams. 4 days of Reboot the Earth in Doha. 🌍 From 23–26 September, participants came together in Qatar to tackle this year’s theme of Agriculture and AI, developing solutions for crop and site suitability, as well as cold-chain monitoring and food-loss reduction. Organized by United Nations Office of Information and Communications Technology and FAO and in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar and the Hamad Bin Jassim Center for Computer Science Education, the hackathon was supported by experts and mentors on open source, artificial intelligence, sustainability and building apps with AI. Two teams were named co-champions. Congratulations to all 22 teams, and thank you to everyone who made these four days possible. 🔐 October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month! As technology continues to transform how we communicate, collaborate and deliver our work, cyber threats are evolving too. They're becoming more targeted and difficult to recognize. “Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility. Every action we take contributes to a safer and more resilient organization,” says UN ASG and Chief Information Technology Officer Bernardo Mariano Junior. This month, the United Nations Office of Information and Communications Technology is encouraging everyone to remember three simple actions: Pause. Verify. Protect. “Our strongest defense isn’t just technology. It’s the decisions each one of us makes every day." Throughout October, UN colleagues will have opportunities to strengthen their cyber awareness and practical skills, from recognizing social engineering and advanced phishing tactics to understanding how AI is changing the threat landscape. "A more inclusive digital future requires more than access to technology," said Programs Lead for PyLadies Ghana & Contributor at Python Ghana The impact of #UNOpenSourceWeek continues beyond New York. Across Ghana and the wider African open source ecosystem, community leaders are helping create more inclusive pathways into technology through Python, Django and open source. Through PyLadies Ghana and Python Ghana, developers are creating opportunities for people to learn and contribute, whether through mentorship, workshops, tutorials, conferences or hands-on participation in open-source projects. This work is a reminder that open source is about accessible communities: making knowledge easier to share, strengthening digital skills and giving more people the opportunity to help shape the technologies they use. From PyCon Ghana and PyCon Africa to Django Girls, communities are helping developers at different stages of their journeys build skills, find mentors and become contributors themselves. As we continue to share updates from UN Open Source Week 2026, the message remains clear: building an inclusive digital future requires not only access to technology, but the skills, communities and opportunities needed to participate meaningfully in its development. Thanks to Python Software Foundation, Django Software Foundation, Python Ghana and PyLadies Ghana. #WomenInTech #OpenSource https://lnkd.in/eVXEmHCj
Sometimes the smallest decision can open the door to opportunities. Back in April 2018, Theresa Seyram Agbenyegah was invited by a friend to attend a workshop that was part of the Django Girls Sogakope series, which focuses on introducing more women to the world of open source and coding. There, Theresa discovered coding and its possibilities, although she couldn’t have known how profoundly that experience would shape the years ahead. Today, she champions contributions centered around education, ones that spread the word while simultaneously strengthening existing connections within the Ghanaian open source community. Theresa’s journey is part of our Global Voices series. Every virtual meeting during #UNGA81 High-level Week depends on technology that keeps participants connected, wherever they are in the world. Behind that effort is the Virtual Environment Management team in the United Nations Office of Information and Communications Technology, which supports the platforms that enable secure and reliable virtual participation across the United Nations. Among them is Unite Video Conferencing (VC), the UN’s own video conferencing platform. Owned and operated by the Organization, Unite VC helps ensure that critical discussions can take place securely, with communications running on UN-controlled infrastructure and support provided by OICT.
