After 40 years of marriage, I was left to the curb, emotionally, from a marriage with which I never saw ending. At the same time, Hurricane Helene hit my beloved lifetime home of Asheville, washing away a career I loved.Out of the blue, a large Italian family I’d known 25 years prior got in touch, welcoming me to move in, offered respite, in my once familiar college town. Because of this family, I now live in a teensy 600 sq ft Art Deco apartment in the heart of the City’s Park, can walk to anything, and it has truly helped heal my soul. Doing a trust fall into the arms of this family changed my life. I love them, the children are now adults with children of their own, they include me in everything calling me Tanta Lish. I’ll be forever grateful. How I wish we were friends! A woman who only knew me by a few months in a community group took me in. As a mutual aid relationship I was able to use my meager income for self enrichment; travel and becoming a licensed yoga instructor. In exchange I help with meals, cleaning and simple odd jobs that are very comforting to a person of her age. Honestly much of the travel was to not be petty and companion about character differences. The fact that she welcomed me back repeatedly has allowed our interactions to become dearest of friends and supportive towards both our physical and mental health. This arrangement has been so beautiful for us both it has become a mission for me to unite the housing secure, but wanting/needing assistance or companionship with those that are housing insecure. ops_optimizer8a207 2026-10-01T18:02:05.392Z How I love this story! Your open heart (and hers), your willingness to take a leap of faith, are inspiring. My family lived in Santa Cruz and Piedmont so I know your area well.Thank you for sharing your uplifting story for many to better understand that sometimes, if a portal opens, it’s worth leaping through. Cheers to New Life!!! Like Replies Copy link Email Facebook WhatsApp X LinkedIn Bluesky Threads lighning bolt icon An icon in the shape of a lightning bolt. Impact Link
wrk_learner02ae4 2026-10-01T15:41:32.503Z In 2019 I was gentrified out of my apartment and would have been homeless. Booomers seem to completey oblivious to the fact that they rode an escalator to the top: affordable housing, cheap college tuition, and entry-level jobs that became careers with pensions and health insurance. Then they pulled the ladder up behind them, made those same advantages nearly impossible for younger generations to reach, and blamed us for being lazy or not working hard enough. That's galling coming from people who had it far easier. A headline praising their work ethic only exacerbates this problem.
