Probably a solid 8.5 out of 10 for racing fans

<- Racing Fan

I’d say it’s a solid 8.5 out of 10 for the casual racing fan.

For those of us pushing the F1 thread up past 40 pages before the halfway point of the season? Maybe not so much. For me it’s a 6.5/7 out of 10 at best - honestly closer to 5. I’ve seen these sorts of shots before, the suspension of disbelief is key, there was a lot more that I disliked than I liked about it, there are a large number of rules they just hand-wave away, and frankly a good race weekend blows this film out of the water. It IS better than this year‘s Japanese Grand Prix, though - Suzuka was awful. I’d say it was better than the race at Monaco, but doesn’t hold a candle to qualifying at Monaco.

… but I’m an F1 sicko. 🤷‍♂️

But for the casual fan who all they know about F1 comes from Drive To Survive? They’ll lap it up.

Just got home from Shin Godzilla.

Overall? I liked it.
The first two thirds? Brilliant. Fun camera shots, it’s a disaster and disaster response/recovery film. Very fun, not a lot of camp, just a fairly believable story of ‘WTF is happening?!’
It was riveting.

The last third was more of a mixed bag. It gets preachy. There were multiple motivational speeches (this could have been an email). The cinematography became more traditional - not always, but predominantly so. The Japanese-American special envoy had a terrible English accent. And the sound editing for the last main battle sequence was bloody awful.

But I did laugh uncontrollably for the ‘unmanned train bombs’ sequence. :ROFLMAO:

It’s my first time seeing it, so I can’t compare it to the non-4k version. But yeah, for $10? That was a fun 2 hours.

What's this referring to? Feel free to throw the answer in a spoiler.

Probably this:
As in almost ALL of Stephen King's books, there is a 'dark figure' that the protagonist ends up going after in the end of The Long Walk. It's really rudimentary and not very fleshed out, but it's also King's first novel that he wrote - sort of the barebones of an idea that will become much more fleshed out over King's career.

Ok I need to read that ending again.
I have no memory of the Man In Black showing up in that book. I remember that the protagonist starts to hallucinate a bit at the end, and then when he wins, the guy running the contest steps on to the road. The protagonist doesn't recognise him and "somehow finds the strength to run". The end.

You've pretty much got it, but the protagonist is (maybe) running AFTER the hallucination - the 'dark figure'.

It's ambiguous, kind of rough, and honestly a bit of a stretch that requires having knowledge of LATER King works...
But, again, this is the earliest of early King.

Tron - Ares : The best movie about 3D printing EVAR

What it is: A sequel/reboot of Tron and Tron - Legacy

What it isn't: Did you know that NIN did the soundtrack for this movie?

Soundtrack? Did you know that NIN did the soundtrack for this movie? Truly chestthumping and ass shaking.
The visuals? Gorgeous.
The fight scenes? So Amazing.

I could keep going on about NIN, but I think that joke's been about beaten to death by now.

Any time a work of fiction tries to span naivete and brilliance and the creation mythos, you wind up with a cross between Pygmalion and Flowers for Algernon or Frankenstein or ye olde Adam and Eve.

This isn't new territory, as even modern movies from the 80s onwards have had a go at it: Weird Science, Real Genius, The Matrix, Pixels, Star Trek TNG (Data), Star Trek Voyager (7 of 9), Aliens etc

Is it worth watching? It's certainly entertaining.

I did spend a good chunk of time with my arms flying up at the screen in frustration and shaking my head with frustration from time to time, until the NIN soundtrack kicks in and all of the awesome visuals start again.

What about the plot? I hate to think everything is AI slop, but this feels like AI slop after it was fed the all of the tropes from tvtropes.org related to Tron and The Matrix plus toss in the usual Die Hard equivalences. But at least it's well curated.

If you were looking for fan service, there's a bit of that, but it's pretty superficial in feeling and far removed from the sequel but still super cool.

Jeff Bridges exudes more "The Dude" than Kevin Flynn, but maybe Kevin Flynn was proto "The Dude" with less weed.

It's not one grid, but rather each company has its own grid. This is separate from the open internet

Jared Leto does his best with the material at hand, but the writing is so uneven that he launches from an innocent to fully immersed into the human world and back and forth without the notion of boundaries, until the plot needs it. Ares as a character is like a cross between Morbius and Niander Wallace of Blade Runner 2049 but with the sweeter aspects of Joker.

It's still not as execrable as Kraven the Hunter, which is of course a backhanded compliment worthy of being dished out by Gillian Anderson like an epic pimp-slap.

There's also a few moments where it feels like there was a subplot about internal betrayal/intrigue at Encom, but that appears to have been cut or reshot.

When the film is not in awesome music video game cinematic mode, or cringey conversation mode, then it's almost inevitable that so much time is spent looking through text and video files and status screens in cool ways that ultimately remind me of the memory balls in Inside Out but get more from the current extant smartphone/social media life.

The humor is at least thankfully intentional for the most part.

At least they did use actual Linux/Unix style CLI commands at one point, including SUDO!

There is also a mid credits scene, which in many ways rescues the movie from the straight good guy/bad guy plot in a twist worthy of M Night Shyamalan.

If the programs in Encom's grid are "good" and worth saving, then what about the poor programs in Dilinger's grid? Worthy of the movie ending genocidal first strike?

It's like, what about all of the poor outsourced maintenance workers and contractors onsite at the Death Star, trying to finish up that installation and post-sales support like those poor Hyundai-LG contractors in Georgia?

At least we got to see Sark 3.0

So, how could this movie be summed up? (Keep in mind I'm of Korean descent as I say this, but this is kind of like my Uncle Roger take)

You know that South Park meme with Cartman complaining about Kathleen Kennedy going too far for diversity? It almost feels like that.

White dude lead
Asian leading lady (Korean, to help cash in on that current trend)
Second white dude tech bro lead
Black lady supporting cast member with lots of lines and plot importance
Latino dude supporting cast member with lots of funny lines (the funny bad guy from the RoadHouse reboot)
South Asian hacker dude boss man/VP (Hasan Minaj)
Angry old white lady who pimp-slaps somebody (Gillian Anderson)

I nearly lost it when the female lead's biographical file popped up and the father's name is the same as my brother-in-law's name. They really leaned a bit too hard into having the character be authentically Korean. They even went so far as to stick with a non iPhone, which is totally unrealistic.

Then the summary of the movie could conceivably be seen as the following:

A morality play to show overly studious and hard working geeky Asian girls that look like Peanuts' gang Marcie, that sacrifice their lives for a career, can eventually wind up with handsome hunky wild white boyfriend that looks like Jesus, and can be tamed even though super dangerous, and then give you space to boost your career until he's ready to settle down.

My daughter died laughing when I told her this.

Don't worry, no PDA, so it will be fine for the Asian market too without any editing.

You could also go down the path of deconstructing it for comparisons to slavery, but that's pretty depressing so I won't.

For fans of NIN? Awesome video wrapper for the music, maybe 8.5 out of 10. There were a few wonky screeching sounds for soundtrack that took it down.

For fans of Tron? Lots of fan service including 2 outright cameos, but ultimately this felt like an awesome NIN music video with some dumb dialogue thrown in. Maybe a 7.5 because some things were so outright visually cool.

For movie fans who want to see cool stuff and stuff blowing up with epic soundtrack? That's a 9 out of 10. Just ignore the dialogue once it starts being more than 7 words in a sentence.

See it on the cheap. Got it.

I did enjoy the very uneven Super Mario Brothers movie featuring Bob Hoskin and John Leguizamo, because that was its own truly weird beast, and probably about as fun as the Howard the Duck movie.

The scene of the goomba's in the elevator is <chef's kiss>.

This new one is definitely going to be a, "Watch on streaming, maybe/eventually," for me.

Backrooms: Pure Nightmare Fuel

What it is: A mirror universe/parallel dimension sci-fi flick with paranormal and horror elements based upon some internet apocryphal stories and collaborative fictional backstory

Feels like: If someone took the alternate universe part of Poltergeist (meta homage in the movie) and turned that into the whole movie, or that book turned movie that turns people insane from In The Mouth Of Madness. Poltergeist meets Alice in Wonderland meets Videodrome meets Dreamscape. It's like the gestalt of all the underlying social angst from the pandemic and current socio-political madness around the world.

Where it falls down: It didn't. I did. The movie is surreal and disturbing enough to unsettle you. The audience was completely silent, except for two obvious humorous moments. Even the idiots who tried talking over the movie in the beginning, STFU.

The VFX: Truly well done. There's a lot of obvious practical effects work that is seamlessly blended in with the more fantastical surreal parts worth of M.C. Escher

Bathroom Break: When the second psychiatrist visit starts, head to the bathroom. Although the movie isn't that long, it's good to take a psychological break

Soundtrack: Disturbing and haunting and tense at all the right moments

Voiceover: There's parts that effectively become a voice over that aren't actually voice overs, but soundtrack portions in place of dialogue

Feeling like you've been sleeping too well lately? Go watch this movie.

It's not your traditional monster horror or slasher or gore or deathporn flick.

Instead it's as if you deep dive into the human mind and expose all the horror lying within, and expose the ugliness for all to see. It's like if you inverted Inside Out, filter out the Cthulu and bring all of your worst nightmares to life.

Underneath all this is the very analog setting of the 80s/90s which could also be a subtextual element that mirrors the difference between the hazy analog life of yesteryear and the perception of discrete digital modernity.

The main character has their story as does the psychiatrist, and everything else kind of falls away, but it doesn't matter.

I feel like I could sense my sanity level taking a hit as the movie lurched onwards towards the ending.

Chiwetel Ejiofor seems to be often typecast a strident and overly straight laced persona, and this is probably the first time he gets to really unleash his range while still arguably fitting into his typecast. But hey, it's a paycheck. If you're not Tom Cruise or etc, may as well go the Michael Caine route and act TF out of every role you get.

9.0 for all those who wish to lose a bit of grip on reality. Not a 10 because I was genuinely disturbed by the end.

Excellent. I have a long weekend in a week and a half, I’ll go to a late night showing.

I went to see The Backrooms, with the bonus footage. Because I was bored and couldn’t check into my hotel until after 3pm.
And it felt like an extended Kane Parsons story. The extra footage was literally a direct tie-in between the film and the youtube series.

I’m gad I only spent matinee prices to see it.

Just make sure the concession stand gives you popcorn rather than ball bearings painted to look like birdseed.
I’m also going to poke any archway-covered entrances to make sure they’re real and not a painting on a solid surface.

Reviews are apparently starting to release for Coyote vs. Acme; happened to come across this one in the LA Times. Short version: really good, go see it. A couple of quotes:

On tap for this weekend...

Tomorrow at noon for me. I’ve been excited for this ever since the initial rumors that a group was trying to pry it out of grubby hands of unreleased-WB-tax-write-off-hell.

It goes on for quite a while, and is VERY much the inspiration for the film.

Isn't that not so subtle right wing nut who made his own terrible right wing fanfic movies about the strong white christian man doing all the special operator things only a string white christian man can do to protect freedom and women from the evil terrorists?
That’s the one. “Reactionary Bigot” is a good descriptor.
