🎧 What does doing research at GiveWell actually look like? In this episode, co-founder and CEO Elie Hassenfeld asks three researchers how they approach hard questions, when they've changed their minds, and how they decide when to go deeper versus when to call a project done. Senior Program Officer Dilhan Perera 🔸, Senior Researcher James Watson, and Research Analyst Meghna Ray, MPH each bring an example from their work: reassessing how to prevent childhood pneumonia deaths, building a better estimate of how many children die of malaria, and developing an AI tool to check our work for errors. 👉 Listen now: https://bit.ly/4hp0Owp

Family planning is a newer area for our grantmaking, and we're looking forward to what we'll learn from this grant. We discuss it, along with other updates on our family planning work, in a recent episode of GiveWell Conversations. 🎧 Listen here: https://bit.ly/4co087k 📄 Read more about the grant here: https://bit.ly/46uWmpI
We’re so excited to announce that Lafiya’s community-based family planning programme has been awarded a $1 million USD grant from GiveWell! 💜 GiveWell's mission is to help people in need as much as they can by researching the most cost‑effective ways to save and improve lives. GiveWell has identified Lafiya’s community-based programme as a potentially highly cost-effective intervention. We are already operating in six Nigerian states, and this grant will enable us to further expand our work. GiveWell’s back-of-the-envelope calculation estimates that the grant is 14x more cost-effective than their benchmark, and will result in approximately 270,000 additional years of contraceptive coverage. "Northern Nigeria has among the lowest rates of modern contraceptive use in the world. Lafiya's model uses health workers to provide counseling and contraceptives to people in their own communities, and we think that approach could be highly cost-effective," said Daniel Issing, a researcher on the New Areas team at GiveWell. "This grant should tell us more about how well it works, and what we learn we expect will inform our family planning strategy in the future." “This GiveWell grant is a powerful validation of the Lafiya model and the dedicated work of our Lafiya Sisters,” says Klau Pakos, CEO of Lafiya. “It will enable us to further test and scale our community-based approach, reaching more women in Nigeria who have never before had access to safe and voluntary family planning services. We are grateful to GiveWell for this recognition and support.” Read GiveWell’s full analysis of the grant here: https://lnkd.in/e2djMFnx

🎧 As GiveWell's grantmaking grows, we're scaling the work of our Cross-Cutting research subteam, which pressure-tests our research to strengthen the rigor of our work. In this episode, GiveWell co-founder and CEO Elie Hassenfeld speaks with Program Director Alex Cohen, who leads the Cross-Cutting subteam, about how better data can improve our decision-making. They discuss how we're funding independent studies to check the accuracy of the data we rely on, developing survey guidelines to improve how that data is collected, and testing AI as a tool to check our work. 👉 Listen now: https://bit.ly/3URHfUw

Our 2025 metrics report is out. Last year, GiveWell raised $616 million—more than in any previous year—and directed $427 million to programs in 32 countries. We expect those programs will save about 86,000 lives. Global needs still far exceed available resources. We've spent years growing our research capacity and scope so we can direct significantly more funding to the most impactful opportunities we can find, and 2025 was a milestone in that ongoing growth. We're grateful to the donors who make this work possible. 👉 Swipe through the intro below, or read more on our blog: https://bit.ly/4qWNzpN

Our new blog post with interactive data visualizations walks through the research behind our $276 million grant to The Against Malaria Foundation for insecticide-treated net campaigns in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This grant—our largest to date—will support net campaigns across all 26 provinces in DRC from 2027 through 2029. Read about how we tested whether past campaigns we funded had actually reduced child deaths, how we drew on several sources of data to sharpen our estimate of DRC's malaria burden, and what we found about how quickly nets wear out there. 👉 Explore the data: https://bit.ly/3SG5WTh

GiveWell, with co-funding from Coefficient Giving, recently made our largest grant to date: $276 million to The Against Malaria Foundation for insecticide-treated net campaigns in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This grant will support the procurement and distribution of around 92 million nets for campaigns across all 26 provinces from 2027 through 2029, 46 million of which we think would not have been distributed otherwise. We estimate that this will avert approximately 67,000 deaths. A grant of this size called for research we couldn't have taken on a few years ago. We've spent years building a team that can do this kind of work, and it's showing up in how much funding we can move—we anticipate our grantmaking will approach or even exceed $1 billion this year. In our new podcast episode, GiveWell co-founder and CEO Elie Hassenfeld speaks with Senior Program Officer Alex Bowles, who led the investigation. 👉 Listen now: https://bit.ly/4qA13HJ

⚖️ We're hiring a Head of Legal to lead GiveWell's legal function and build a team that can scale with our expected growth. This role will serve as a strategic thought partner to senior leadership, own GiveWell's legal portfolio and strategy, and oversee our Grants Administration function. This is a founding leadership role: you'll design the systems, processes, and team structure that GiveWell's legal function needs as the organization grows. As Head of Legal, you will: - Build GiveWell's legal function from scratch and serve as our primary legal decision-maker, developing a calibrated legal strategy as the organization scales - Own risk and compliance for a nonprofit that receives donations, makes grants, and operates in multiple jurisdictions, spanning employment law, data privacy, IP, and contract management - Provide leadership and management for our Grants Administration function, including guidance on complex or novel grant structures - Modernize how legal and grants administration work gets done, using technology to increase capacity and reduce reliance on manual review We're looking for candidates with 10+ years of legal experience, including significant in-house experience; active state bar membership in good standing; and expertise across nonprofit and tax-exempt law, data privacy, contract negotiation, employment, and international governance. You'll need the pragmatism to know when something requires extreme care and when to keep things simple, plus the ability to translate complex legal risk into clear, actionable guidance. 📍 Remote-friendly (US only) 💰 $374,000 (NYC / SF Bay Area) | $340,000 (all other US locations) ✅ Fully funded health/dental/vision/life insurance, four weeks PTO + annual summer break, 16 weeks fully paid parental leave, 403(b) with automatic 5% employer contribution 👉 Apply here: https://lnkd.in/eAWCRgwC 🔁 Please repost to help us expand our reach, or share directly with people in your network who might be a great fit!

🔎 We're hiring a Cause Prioritization Lead to help GiveWell decide where to look next—building a portfolio of early-stage grants in emerging cause areas and moving quickly on promising opportunities that don't fit our existing teams. This is a Senior Program Officer-level role on our New Areas team, where you'll build and lead a new subteam. Recent examples of areas the team has explored include market shaping, health systems strengthening, and applications of AI to global health. As Cause Prioritization Lead, you will: - Own and improve how GiveWell prioritizes cause areas, combining evidence, cost-effectiveness modeling, and judgment - Oversee a portfolio of grant investigations across our highest-priority emerging cause areas, and build the research agenda behind them - Investigate our more complicated opportunities directly, including programs at an earlier stage of development or support for government prioritization and planning - Build a network across implementers, funders, and academia to source new ideas - Manage and develop a small team that can respond quickly to unusual opportunities We're looking for a strategic generalist—someone who imposes structure on broad, undefined problems, gets up to speed fast on unfamiliar topics, makes bets under uncertainty, and can find the crux of an argument in a field they don't know well. Most candidates will have 5-10 years of post-grad experience and an advanced degree in a quantitative field. We’re also open to people with comparable experience who don’t fit that mold exactly. 📍 Remote-friendly (US + international case-by-case) 💰 $308,000 (NYC / SF Bay Area) | $280,000 (all other US locations) | international rates available ✅ Fully funded health/dental/vision/life insurance, four weeks PTO + annual summer break, 16 weeks fully paid parental leave, 403(b) with automatic 5% employer contribution ⏰ Applications close September 30, 2026 👉 Apply here: https://lnkd.in/eEPkyTdx 🔁 Please repost to help us reach more great candidates, or share directly with someone in your network who might be a great fit!
