Abstract
We demonstrate handover-coordinated optical path switching with optical-wireless cooperative control in a radio access network (RAN) based on an all-photonic network (APN), which offers low latency, high reliability, and low power consumption. These requirements for sixth generation (6G) mobile systems must be achieved across optical and wireless domains in the RAN, including X-haul transport. The handover-coordinated optical path switching was successfully executed in real time using an OpenAirInterface (OAI)-based Open RAN testbed including actual radio transmissions. The interruption time we used as a handover performance metric was 211 ms, which was almost the same as the interruption time of 224 ms in a conventional packet network for comparison. These results indicate that our demonstrated handover-coordinated optical path switching enables the RAN to leverage the APN benefits over the packet network without any handover performance degradation.
