# IndieQR

> Turn one URL or text value into a downloadable QR code, locally and without a tracking redirect.

Make SVG and PNG QR codes in your browser, with no tracking redirect.

The canonical page is https://indieqr.com/.

## Use the tool

Open [IndieQR](https://indieqr.com/) to complete the job. The questions below describe the supported input, result, and limits. Every answer names its source next to it.

## Questions and limits

### What is a QR code?

A QR code is a square grid of black and white modules that holds text, usually a web address, in a form a phone camera reads in about a second. The camera decodes the text and offers to open it. Every phone camera released in the last few years reads them without an app. The pattern carries error correction, so a scratch or a smudge on a print can hide part of it and the scan still works.

### What is a tracking redirect in a QR code?

Most free generators do not encode your address. They encode a short link on their own domain that redirects to yours, so they can count scans, sell you the statistics, and stop the redirect when the plan ends or the company closes. A printed code then leads nowhere. IndieQR encodes the exact value you type, so a scan opens your address with nothing in between, and the code keeps working as long as your page does.

### Which error correction level should I use?

M is the default and fine for a screen or a clean print. L stores the value in the fewest modules and survives about 7 percent damage. Q and H survive about 25 and 30 percent, at the cost of a denser grid. Use H for a sticker, a poster outdoors, or anything small that may get scuffed. The input cap of 1,200 bytes fits every level, so the choice never changes what you can encode, only how dense the grid is.

### Should I download SVG or PNG?

SVG for print and for anything that may be resized: it is vector geometry, so it stays sharp on a business card or a billboard. PNG for a screen, a chat message, or a tool that refuses SVG; choose 256, 512, or 1024 pixels. Both files hold the same code, black modules on a white field with a four-module quiet zone, which is the margin the QR specification asks for. Keep that white border when you place it.

### Can I make a Wi-Fi QR code?

Yes. Choose Wi-Fi network, enter the network name, pick WPA, WEP, or no password, add the password, and mark the network hidden if it is. The page builds the `WIFI:T:WPA;S:name;P:password;;` payload that iOS and Android cameras read, and a guest joins by scanning it. The name and password are encoded in your browser only: they never enter a request, the page address, browser storage, or analytics, and the form remembers nothing.

### Why does my QR code not scan?

Almost always size, contrast, or the border. Print the code at least 2 centimeters wide for a close scan, and larger for a poster read from across a room. Keep it black on white, and do not crop away the white margin. Avoid glare behind glass and curved surfaces. A long value makes a dense grid that needs more size; a shorter address, or a lower error correction level, gives a coarser grid that scans from further away.

## Promises

- The core is free: no account, no card, no premium plan, no upgrade nag, no hidden paywall.
- Private lookup activity is never published.
- Cookieless analytics measures visits. No lookup history becomes public inventory.
