School of Civil and Environmental Engineering

CRICOS No.00213J
The Queensland University of Technology (QUT) acknowledges the Turrbal and Yugara, as the First Nations
owners of the lands where QUT now stands. We pay respect to their Elders, lores, customs and creation
spirits. We recognise that these lands have always been places of teaching, research and learning.

QUT acknowledges the important role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people play within the QUT
community.

Introduction to the Unit

CRICOS No.00213J
Why

• Civil Engineers at forefront of designing and implementing changes to the environment

• Critical to manage environmental impacts that arise and to achieve sustainability

• Therefore, understanding the interconnectedness of systems is critical

CRICOS No.00213J
How

• Planning and conceptual design of a real-world project

• During that process, understanding the relevant environmental concepts and

indigenous perspectives

• Assessing the consequential environmental impacts

CRICOS No.00213J
What

• Semester long project replicating a real-world project life cycle

• Mix of group (40%) and individual (60%) assessments (total of 4)

• Critical content delivered in lectures, working through the assessments in tutorials

CRICOS No.00213J
Canvas

The primary source of Information

The most important features

• Modules tab – assessment details, lecture and tutorial material
• QUT Readings – the repository for important resources related to the assessments

CRICOS No.00213J
Importance of understanding indigenous perspectives

Project area has significant indigenous connections (watch the first 3 min. of the video)

• Developing an appreciation of indigenous heritage

• The essential need for cultural sensitivity

Critical for civil engineers in professional practice

CRICOS No.00213J
Fundamental questions to answer in the assessments

• How did you engage to understand indigenous perspectives?

• What did you find out from your engagement?

• What have you done in response to your findings and how were these incorporated into
your work?

Starting point should be the resources provided in QUT Readings

CRICOS No.00213J
Project planning

CRICOS No.00213J
In a real-world project
• Understanding the client’s brief

• Meeting client needs and expectations

• Maintaining the integrity of the project site and locality/cultural values

• Safeguarding community interests

• Adopting sustainable practices

Important to relate the same approach to this Unit
