Brief Introduction:
1. The length of the reading task, it overwhelms me because I don’t know what to focus on.
2. Unfamiliarity with the words/text, especially when it’s written the way I am not accustomed to.
3. Comprehending text, even though it’s only short in length – suddenly I can’t make sense of any of the
words I’m reading.
Activity 1:
1st Reading: First is the speaker, the one who is narrating the excerpt. Next is Laura, the speaker’s friend.
Then comes Miss Lucy, the eccentric guardian in Hailsham whose loud speaking voice captured attention
in the pavilion. And lastly, Peter, the boy in the pavilion whom Miss Lucy talks to.
2nd Reading: Kathy is the persona who also turns out to be the narrator of the story. She tells the story of
her life in it and relives her past childhood memories by doing so. As a person, Kathy is reserved. In the
novel, she is revealed to be 31 years of age, who now assumes the role of a “carer” and awaits her
eventual fate as “donor”.
3rd Reading: Kathy noticed Ms. Lucy looks off. From her standing posture, Kathy senses a feeling of
uneasiness. Ms. Lucy was standing near the edge of the roof. The rain continues to pour down the roof,
but Ms. Lucy doesn’t move an inch away from it.
