INT. APARTMENT-DAY
The shades are pulled down. The room is a mess. The bed,
unmade. The floor is covered with clothing. A record player
sits on top of a shelf made out of plywood and held up with
bricks. The record keeps spinning but it's just finished
playing.
Sitting on the bed, DARIA, 22, types away at her typewriter.
Her hair is down and frizzed. Her mouth puffs away at a *
cigarette and she occasionally ashes into a plate with a half
eaten sandwich. She stops and looks at what she's written. It
reads:
Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.
Her cell phone rings from underneath a pile of clothes. She
unearths it. It's her mom’s office.
DARIA
Hello?
INT. OFFICE, NEW YORK CITY-EVENING
A high intensity, fast paced New York City office is still
awake. On the phone in her office is Daria’s mother, SOPHIE,
slick, put together and very much in control of every
situation. She flips through some papers as she chats on her
corded phone.
SOPHIE
Daria. Have you checked your
account?
INT. APARTMENT-DAY
Daria automatically gets up and starts looking around her
room. She picks up crumpled receipts and examines them.
DARIA
Why do you keep sending me money? I
told you I don’t need it.
INT. OFFICE-EVENING
Sophie puts down the papers she’s been flipping through:
SOPHIE
Daria, I've been working for 30
years to have enough money to
support my child.

2.
SOPHIE (CONT'D)
You take the money I give you. I
don't know what this struggling
artist bullshit is-
DARIA
It’s not bullshit, mom.
SOPHIE
(over the phone)
Did you check your account or not?
DARIA
No.
INT. OFFICE-EVENING
SOPHIE
I just deposited a check for 500
dollars. Do you have any money left
from last month?
DARIA
(over the phone)
I gave last months money to the
pound.
SOPHIE
You’re unbelievable.
INT. APARTMENT-DAY
DARIA
How do you expect me to get any
work done when you shower me in
cash? I can’t work if I have
distractions. You just-
SOPHIE
(to someone else)
Yes. Yes. That’s right. All right,
Emily. I’ll fix it.
(to Daria)
I have to go Daria. Check the
account. I’ll call you tonight.
She hangs up. Daria places her cellphone down. She stares at
the wall for a moment before gazing at her cursed out laptop
screen.
Daria walks to her door, moves the metal pole securing the
door shut and walks out.
3.
EXT. ADAMS BLVD.-DAY
It's sunny. Too sunny. Daria forgot her sunglasses, but
doesn't have the patience to go back inside her apartment to
get them.
She walks to the gas station up the block. Now that school’s
out the streets are vacant and less friendly than before.
Daria sticks out like a sore thumb against the Mexican street
vendors selling giant plastic bags of fresh fruit.
She runs to make the light.
INT. GAS STATION-DAY
Daria stands in the candy isle. She's already holding a giant
bag of chips. She picks up a bag of peanut M&Ms, but eyes the
Skittles as well.
Behind her, TAGGART 20s and not nearly as unique looking as
his name might imply, picks up a package of Sour Patch Kids.
TAGGART
Chips and M&Ms. Sounds like a fun
day.
DARIA
Excuse me?
TAGGART
Looks like you’re having a good
day.
DARIA
OK.
Daria continues debating between M&Ms and Skittles.
TAGGART
Weren’t you in my neuroscience
class?
DARIA
I don’t think so.
TAGGART
Did you take neuroscience last
semester?
DARIA
Yes.
4.
TAGGART
There’s only one class.
DARIA
I guess I was in it then.
TAGGART
I’m Taggart.
DARIA
Daria.
He notices Daria’s problem.
TAGGART
You shouldn’t get either. Those
chips go great with something sweet
and sour.
He holds up his Sour Patch Kids.
DARIA
Sour patch kids?
TAGGART
It’s amazing.
DARIA
No thanks.
Her phone vibrates. A text message from KHALIA. It reads:
Come over?
Daria decides on the M&Ms and walks out of the store. Taggart
drops the sour patch kids and runs after her.
TAGGART
Did you really just steal that?
Daria turns around.
DARIA
I’m really busy, Tag.
TAGGART
Taggart.
DARIA
Bye.
She walks across the street.
TAGGART
Bye.
5.
INT. KHALIA’S APARTMENT-DAY
KHALIA, 20s black, lies on her bed. Daria sits on the edge
flipping through TV channels.
KHALIA
Wanna get a drink?
EXT. EAST SUNSET BLVD-DAY
Daria and Khalia walk up to the door of a seemingly open bar.
Daria tries to open the door. It’s locked. Khalia sighs and
takes out a cigarette.
DARIA
What time is it?
KHALIA
1:22.
Daria takes out a cigarette and lights it.
DARIA
Well that seems like a reasonable
time to open a bar.
They look across the street and a dingy dive bar seems to be
open. They decide on going there.
INT. DIVE BAR-DAY
Khalia and Daria sit at a booth in the empty bar. They drink
their whiskey’s on the rocks.
DARIA
So how’s Adam? Are you guys doing
well and shit?
KHALIA
Yeah. It’s nice. He treats me so
well. Alex was never like this.
DARIA
Fuck Alex.
KHALIA
Fuck Alex and fuck Laura.
DARIA
We do not speak of her.
Khalia raises her glass and they cheers.
6.
KHALIA
How’s life without Chris?
DARIA
Awful. Just awful. My roommate is
gone and I can’t even call him with
meaningless questions like if I’m
in the mood for a dark gingery beer
that will make me feel like it’s
winter what should I get?
KHALIA
Where is he anyway?
DARIA
Meditating in a retreat for two
months. Apparently they don’t let
you talk at all the entire time.
KHALIA
He’s crazy.
DARIA
Yeah. Gotta love him.
KHALIA
You need to get laid.
DARIA
You need to mind your own business.
KHALIA
Your bitterness is distressing.
DARIA
I’ve decided to join a convent.
Leave me to my life choices.
KHALIA
Bullshit.
DARIA
Whatever. LA sucks. I don’t want to
date anyone here.
KHALIA
You should give people a chance.
Don’t be so picky. Maybe hook up
with someone at the party tonight.
DARIA
No.
7.
KHALIA
You’ll never lose your virginity
with an attitude like that.
DARIA
Convent.
INT. ADAM’S APARTMENT-DAY
Khalia walks into the apartment. She falls onto ADAM, 30s and
white, who catches her and carries her onto the couch.
She kisses him. He smiles.
ADAM
Have you been drinking.
KHALIA
Maybe.
She kisses him again.
ADAM
I have to go to work.
KHALIA
I just got here!
ADAM
You said you were coming at 2. It’s
5.
KHALIA
Daria came over. I lost track of
time.
Khalia holds him down and kisses him again. He gives in for a
second.
ADAM
I have to go to work!
He gets up.
KHALIA
Noooooo!
ADAM
Yesssss!
He gets his stuff together.
8.
ADAM (CONT’D)
You can stay here if you want.
KHALIA
Are you coming to the party
tonight?
ADAM
I dunno. I have to work. I think
I’ll just be super exhasuted after.
KHALIA
Come on!
He comes over, kisses her and whispers:
ADAM
I don’t want to go to a party with
you. I don’t want to leave my bed
when I’m with you.
He kisses her again.
KHALIA
Your cuteness is fading.
ADAM
I’m going to work. I’ll see you
later.
KHALIA
Fine.
Adam leaves. Khalia turns on the TV.
EXT. CHILLER CRIB-NIGHT
Daria stands encomposed in a cloud of smoke. She wears all
black, has a bottle of red wine in her hand and lips and
teeth that clearly show it. She chats with Khalia while
lighting a joint.
BRIAN, 25 blatantly American with a slight southern drawl
gives Khalia a hug.
BRIAN
Khalia!
KHALIA
Brian!
He turns to Daria who is smoking her joint looking off at
something else.
9.
BRIAN
Daria!
She turns to him and smiles.
DARIA
Brian!
BRIAN
Want a beer?
Daria holds up her bottle of red wine.
DARIA
I’m good.
BRIAN
Ok.
DARIA
Ok.
There’s a moment. Brian looks at Daria. Daria completely
disregards him.
BRIAN
Well I’ll see you guys later!
He walks off.
Khalia looks at Daria.
KHALIA
Are you fucking kidding me?
DARIA
What?
KHALIA
What?
DARIA
What?
KHALIA
Why are you so mean to people that
like you?
Legitimately not believing Khalia:
DARIA
Oh please. Brian doesn’t like me.
10.
KHALIA
You’re an idiot.
Daria raises her bottle of wine.
DARIA
Cheers to that.
She takes a swig.
DARIA (CONT’D)
I’m going to the bathroom.
KHALIA
All right.
Khalia is left by herself. She takes out a cigarette.
In walks ALEX, 20s hipster film student. On his arm is Laura,
20s just as much of a hipster and film student as Alex. The
two walk in and immediately start talking to people standing
by the door. Everyone laughs and enjoys themselves.
Khalia spots Alex. She looks away immediately.
KHALIA (CONT’D)
(to herself)
Fuck.
Alex spots Khalia. He walks over to her. Laura continues
talking to everyone.
ALEX
Khalia!
Khalia turns around and quickly composes herself.
KHALIA
Alex. Hey. What’s going on?
ALEX
Nothing. I’m surprised to see you
here. It’s been a while.
KHALIA
Yeah. I’ve been working a lot.
Laura walks over. She gives Khalia a hug. Khalia forces
herself to give a hug back.
LAURA
Hey girl. What’s up?
11.
KHALIA
Nothing.
ALEX
Where’s Daria? I haven’t seen her
in ages.
KHALIA
She’s around.
LAURA
Man. We should all go out and get
drinks sometime. Its been so long.
Khalia looks over at Laura. Yeah. It’s been a while for a
reason.
KHALIA
It has been a while.
Beat.
ALEX
Well I’m gonna go get a drink.
LAURA
Me too!
ALEX
Want a refill?
She holds up her solo cup.
KHALIA
I’m good. Thanks.
Daria comes out of nowhere. Both of them watch Alex and Laura
walk off.
DARIA
Was that who I think it was?
KHALIA
Asshole.
DARIA
David’s smoking a jay inside?
Khalia looks at Daria. Yes.
