You’re part of a larger entity, working with others to build something. Yet, I see founders spend hours refining their product or systems, But don't devote time to team development. Here are 7 tools I’ve used (and still use) to build high-performing teams, Based on real lessons from building a £4.1bn business: 1️⃣ Start With Why (Simon Sinek) ↳ Before you focus on what or how...get clear on why. WHAT – The product you sell or the service you provide HOW – What makes you different WHY – Your deeper purpose or belief Every great team needs a reason to get out of bed in the morning. 2️⃣ The 70-20-10 Rule (McCall, Lombardo & Eichinger) ↳ How people actually learn on the job: 70% from challenging experiences 20% from coaching and mentoring 10% from formal training Most teams over-invest in training, and under-invest in real development. I'm amazed at how few founders or CEOs have a coach or mentor. 3️⃣ The Trust Triangle (Frances Frei, Harvard) ↳ Trust isn’t built with perks. It’s earned in three ways: Authenticity – Are you real? Logic – Do your decisions make sense? Empathy – Do you care? Without trust, you can’t build speed or loyalty. 4️⃣ The 5 Stages of Team Development (Tuckman Model) 1. Forming – Team gets together 2. Storming – Conflicts surface 3. Norming – Ground rules form 4. Performing – Results roll in 5. Adjourning – Project ends or evolves Don't panic during ‘storming’. It’s necessary friction. 5️⃣ The Johari Window (Luft & Ingham) ↳ Self-awareness is a team sport. Open – You know, they know Hidden – You know, they don’t Blind Spot – They know, you don’t Unknown – No one knows (yet) This helps surface feedback, build confidence, and avoid surprises. 6️⃣ The Energy/Impact Matrix (Inspired by McKinsey) ↳ Map every team member’s impact vs. energy. Use it to: Make smart hiring/firing decisions Spot burnout early Retain high performers High-performing teams don’t tolerate drift. 7️⃣ The RAPID Decision-Making Model (Bain & Company) ↳ High-performing teams make fast, clear decisions. Recommend – Suggest the course of action Agree – Those who must sign off Perform – Executes the decision Input – Provides relevant facts or opinions Decide – Final decision-maker This clears up delays, dropped balls, and blame. If I had to start DSA all over again from scratch… here’s exactly what I’d do. 1) Pick a Language (and stick to it) I chose C++ because it’s fast, widely used in competitive programming. If you already know Java or Python, that’s fine too. The important part? Don’t keep switching languages. But I will recommend c++ 2) Start with simple problems Begin with arrays, strings, and basic maths problems. The goal here is to get comfortable with problem statements, not to solve the hardest problems on day 1. Try platforms like HackerRank, or LeetCode Easy section. 3) Move topic by topic One topic at a time. My flow was- Arrays → Strings → Recursion → Linked List → Stack & Queue → Trees → Graphs → Dynamic Programming. Don’t jump randomly, it kills consistency. 4)Striver’s DSA Sheet ( I followed) When you’re done with basics, start Striver’s DSA Sheet and try to solve it in order. It’s a mix of easy, medium, and hard problems that cover almost everything for placements. If you get stuck, watch editorials and solutions written by other coders but don’t copy-paste without understanding. 5) Watch this video once -Fastest Way to Learn Data Structure and Algorithm by Sahil & Sara on YouTube. Trust me it’s a game changer 6) Consistency > Motivation Even 1 hour a day is better than a random 5-hour in one day in whole week. Trust me don’t give gaps. Great managers aren't more talented than you. They're running a system you haven't built yet. After working with thousands of leaders, I'm convinced management isn't a gift. It's a set of learnable skills. And those skills combine into a system. Here's the blueprint for you to copy: 1. Self-Awareness (the foundation) ↳ Know your mindset, abilities, and blind spots. ↳ Supplement your struggles, amplify your advantages. ↳ Write your personal operating manual so your team can work with you. 2. Clear Expectations (alignment) ↳ Co-author them with your team. Don't dictate. ↳ Define both the what and the how. ↳ Document what "exceeding" looks like, and recalibrate quarterly. 3. Thoughtful Delegation (leverage) ↳ Transfer ownership, not just tasks. ↳ Match the right work to the right person. ↳ Resist the urge to rescue the moment it gets hard. 4. Deliberate Development (growth) ↳ Coach strengths over weaknesses. Roughly 70/30. ↳ Give everyone a simple 3-bullet growth plan. ↳ Deliver feedback the same day you see it. 5. Systems (reliability) ↳ Run the minimum viable cadence of meetings. ↳ Build dashboards that surface the metrics that matter. ↳ Design processes that make success the default. 6. Diagnosing Problems (compounding) ↳ Find the real bottleneck, not the loudest symptom. ↳ Ask "why" five times to reach the root cause. ↳ Fix the system, not just the person. 7. Relentless Recruiting (talent) ↳ Build your pipeline before you need it. ↳ Test capability with work samples, not just interviews. ↳ Hire for character, not just credentials. Here's the part that matters. None of this is exotic. None of it requires permission. You could start today. But most managers won't. They'll keep relying on instinct and hope. One of the single most important issues in coming years is job transitions. This fascinating research examines not just job adjacency and required skill development for transition, but also bridging, directionality in job migration, and more. Insights include: 📊 The Power of Real-Time Skills Data. Analyzing real-time job posting data provides much more current and granular insights into labor market dynamics compared to traditional occupational classifications and surveys. This is especially valauble during rapid shifts like COVID-19. 🎯 Skills Space Method's High Accuracy. The "Skills Space" method for measuring similarity between skill sets, shown in the diagram, achieved 76% accuracy in predicting actual job transitions. This is impressive for such a complex prediction task and suggests the method captures something fundamental about how people actually move between jobs. 🔄 The Asymmetry of Career Paths. Job transitions are fundamentally asymmetric - it's often much easier to move in one direction between jobs than the other. For example, it may be relatively easy for a Finance Manager to become an Accounting Clerk, but much harder for an Accounting Clerk to become a Finance Manager. 🌉 The "Bridge" Nature of Transferable Skills. Generalist skills act as "bridges" between specialist skill clusters. This provides important insights for career planning - developing transferable skills makes it easier to move between different specialized domains. 🎓 Pathways to Specialized Roles. The analysis reveals clear skill-based pathways into specialized domains, showing how workers can strategically develop skills to transition into complex roles. For example, a Sheetmetal Trades Worker's skillset shows high similarity to an Industrial Designer role, offering a pathway from a high-automation-risk job to a low-automation-risk specialized position. 🆘 Crisis Response Through Skills Matching. The model helps workers displaced by crises like COVID-19 find new roles by identifying transitions that leverage their existing skills, target growing rather than declining occupations, and focus skill development on high-value gaps. This is valuable research. We need much more in this vein, and for this to be applied at all levels of the economy from national and international policy down do individual education.

Most corporate training follows this pattern: - 3 days of training. - Hundreds of slides. - Polite feedback forms. And almost zero change in behaviour. I once looked at a programme that had: • 16 hours of lectures • 6 hours of discussion • A few “reflection activities” And when people went back to work on Monday? Nothing changed. -Not because the facilitator was bad. -Not because the participants were lazy. -Because the learning design was broken. Here is the uncomfortable truth about training: -People do not learn from listening. -People learn from doing. So I started using a very simple rule when designing workshops. The 3–30–300 Rule. 3 minutes → Explain the business problem 30 minutes → Teach the key skills 300 minutes → Practice in real work That is it. Most programmes invert this. They spend 300 minutes explaining concepts and 3 minutes asking people to apply them. Then everyone wonders why nothing sticks. But the moment you flip the ratio, something powerful happens. -People stop being passive participants. -They start becoming active problem solvers. They practice. They experiment. They make mistakes. They improve. And suddenly learning starts showing up where it matters: At work. So the real question every L&D professional should ask is this: If this training disappears tomorrow, will performance actually drop? If the answer is no, the programme was probably just information.
