  • The ABA Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs and Krill Strategies, a Pittsburgh-based legal advisory firm, surveyed approximately 37,000 licensed lawyers across 28 jurisdictions — the largest study of lawyer mental health. The findings are hard to look away from: * About ⅕ of lawyers meet thresholds for moderate to severe symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress * 47.4% of lawyers screened positive for high burnout * 35.9% of lawyers reported high or very high conflict between their professional and personal lives Youngest lawyers typically have the highest mental health burden. The data also surfaces some differences amongst gender and race, with men having higher odds of moderate to high depression, women having higher odds of moderate to high anxiety and stress, and Asian lawyers having a higher likelihood of anxiety. Lawyers’ wellbeing can’t wait.  Tell us your thoughts. Comment below; we’d love to hear. The full article can be found here: https://lnkd.in/etmMSCjV

  • So what does TEDLaw actually look like in a room? Reflection. Joy. A lot of conversation. A little music. And lawyers willing to wrestle with some pretty big questions We held our first TEDLaw training at Greenberg Traurig, LLP in New York — bringing together legal leaders to explore how our professional identity and values show up in the way we practice law, where AI fits into that picture, and how we develop an approach to technology that strengthens rather than replaces human judgment. Over the next 12 weeks, our cohort will continue the work through TEDLaw Insights by Let's Think — that helps participants keep thinking through the questions raised in the training, privately and at their own pace. Then we’ll come back together to see what has surfaced, what has changed, and what we are still wrestling with. Over the next 12 weeks, our cohort will continue to connect through TEDLaw Insights an AI-powered guided reflection experience powered by Let's Think designed to help participants keep thinking about what surfaced in the room as they apply those ideas in their day-to-day work. Then we’ll come back together to hear what they noticed, what challenged them, what changed, and where the questions became more real. This is a journey, not an endpoint, and thanks to everyone including ACC Foundation, Luminance and Andrew (A.J.) Tibbetts and Katy Cole from Greenberg Traurig, LLP for all your support in making this day such a wonderful event. Many thanks for all the great comments including from Sloane Perras, Kim Youngberg, Andy Yoo, Ora Sheinson, Watt Wanapha, Bob Donaldson, Vincent Castiglione, Maria Kokiasmenos, Rhonda Powell, Lauren Nardoni (Aach), Elaine Divelbliss (Libenson), Julie Fenster and so many more!

What does it mean to be a future-ready lawyer? At TEDLaw: Building Future-Ready Lawyers, TED Conferences and the ACC Foundation brought together nearly 45+ Chief legal Officers, General Counsel and direct reports for a half day program to explore that question—not only by examining what AI is changing, but by reflecting on the judgment, values, accountability, and leadership lawyers must continue to strengthen. Our sincere thanks to the New York office of Greenberg Traurig, LLP for their generous sponsorship, extraordinary hospitality, beautiful space, and wonderful lunch; to Luminance for its sponsorship and hands-on legal AI experience; and to Let's Think for enriching the program through their insights and resources. Through TED content, candid conversation, practical exercises, and a live legal AI sandbox, participants explored two of TEDLaw’s five pillars: • Navigating Legal Identity & Values • Practicing Law in the AI Age The complete TEDLaw curriculum includes three additional pillars: • Critical Thinking for Legal Solutions • Intuitive Collaboration in Law • Cultural Competence in Legal Practice Interested in bringing any or all of TEDLaw’s pillars to your clients (existing and potential), organization, or legal team? The tools will change. The way we work will change. Client expectations will change. Future-ready lawyers need more than the ability to keep up. They need the ability to adapt, learn, question assumptions and lead through change. Join the ABA + TEDLaw Founding Cohort on October 1 in Chicago. Register here: ambar.org/aba_tedlaw_reg

  • Lawyers are trained to think like lawyers. But is that still enough? The legal profession is changing. Lawyers everywhere are being asked to make decisions in environments that are faster, more ambiguous, and more human than ever. The question isn't whether the profession will adapt. It's how lawyers can unlock their full potential in an age defined by AI, constant pressure, and evolving expectations about what the law is meant to serve. TEDLaw is on a mission to build future-ready lawyers. TEDLaw brings TED’s approach to ideas, reflection, and conversation into legal learning through five pillars: Navigating Legal Identities & Values, Critical Thinking for Legal Solutions, Intuitive Collaboration in Law, Cultural Competence, and Practicing Law in the AI Age. Over the coming weeks, we’ll use this page to share the ideas behind the pillars, voices from the legal community, questions we are asking in the room, and what we are learning as TEDLaw moves into the field. We’re just getting started, and we’d like you to join us on this journey. What would you like to know about TEDLaw? Comment below; we’d love to hear.

So excited that Marcia is part of our faculty team bringing TEDLaw to the legal industry to help reshape, re-ignite and reframe what we do as lawyers to address AI, meaningfully reflect on our roles, and connect with each other in a peer community that helps us strengthen, develop and create capacities needed to address the future of law. Thanks Marcia Narine Weldon, the ACC Foundation and the American Bar Association for helping make this a reality!!!

For the past 15 years, this week in August meant finishing a syllabus, refining my first assignment, and preparing to welcome a new class of law students. I left full-time academia because I believe that our model for developing lawyers is not working well enough for the profession they are entering. Now that I work across more parts of the legal ecosystem, I see the disconnect even more clearly. I help train large language models in legal reasoning and work with researchers on accuracy, judgment, and how people rely on AI. I work with firms trying to use AI more effectively while also figuring out how to motivate and develop new lawyers. I hear from former students who were academically prepared but must learn many of the social and professional realities of practice on the job. From each vantage point, the same problem comes into view. We expect new lawyers to exercise judgment, manage pressure, communicate with clients, navigate workplace dynamics, collaborate across differences, understand business realities, and use AI responsibly. Yet much of legal education still centers on acquiring and analyzing information, even as technology performs more of the work that once helped junior lawyers develop judgment. The apprenticeship model is shrinking just as the need for better judgment is growing. In May, I released a podcast episode called “Law School Is Breaking.” I discuss why cognitive overload is often mistaken for laziness or fragility, what happens when stressed brains encounter persuasive AI-generated answers, and findings from the CLEAR report on the skills novice attorneys need. That's why my work with TEDLaw means so much. Through TEDLaw, I work with Nishat Ruiter, GC of TED Conferences, the behavioral scientists at Let's Think, and legal experts from around the world dedicated to strengthening the profession. On October 1, TEDLaw and the American Bar Association are holding the ABA + TEDLaw Founding Cohort in Chicago. Approximately 150 law students, lawyers, educators, and legal leaders will meet at Jenner & Block to begin an immersive day followed by a year-long learning journey focused on professional identity and values, critical thinking and analytical reasoning, intuitive collaboration, cultural competence, and responsible practice in the AI age. These are durable professional capacities. Technology makes them more important because a lawyer must still recognize when an answer is wrong, when a question is incomplete, when a relationship needs attention, and when responsibility cannot be delegated to a machine. If your law school, law firm, or in-house legal department is thinking about how to prepare lawyers for this changing environment, reach out to Nishat or me. If you work with young lawyers, what do you wish they already knew or knew how to do? If you have been out of school for a while, what do you wish someone had taught you before you began practicing? And will I see you in Chicago in October?
