Innovate Summer Academy

Creating opportunities for young people isn't only about what they learn in the classroom. It's also about giving them the space to exchange ideas, build relationships and consider what they could contribute in the future. During Innovate Summer Academy, Jamie McAnsh spoke to our students about the role that innovation, leadership and teamwork can play in creating change. His advice was equally focused on the people around them: absorb as much as possible, learn from one another, build networks and create friendships that can extend beyond the programme. He closed with a simple message about resilience: life doesn't always go to plan. What matters is getting back up. A second enjoyable summer teaching Computer Science and AI at Innovate Summer Academy (ISA) by Malvern International PLC. I particularly enjoyed the switch between teaching electronics at the American University of Sharjah and teaching CS and AI to ISA’s students. Updating the curriculum, I was amazed by how far AI has moved in a single year. I also extended the robotics module by utilising Arduino boards to focus on the electronics and sensors aspects of robotics. I sincerely thank Engineer Wasim M. F. Al-Masri from AUS - College of Engineering for his kind assistance in preparing the additional module content. My students at ISA were brilliant and energetic, and they comfortably demonstrated innovative thinking by pulling ideas and concepts from different domains and combining them. Just as valuable were the inspiring discussions with faculty from law, medicine, engineering, and business. Thank you Marcus De Matos, Katty Wadda, PhD, Nour Nashed, Michelle Q., and Anna Chechel, and a special thank you to Kevin McNamara for your trust and generous support. Despite having a short time off during this summer, I came out of it energised and inspired to improve my teaching in the classroom. This Fall 2026 semester at AUS - College of Engineering, I am enjoying being back to teaching electronics, and digital electronics, and additionally, I am thrilled to teach a probability and statistics module to engineering students with an amazing team of instructors and teaching assistants led by Prof Prof. Aqeel Ahmed. I am looking forward for an academic year full of growth and blessings.
