I really hope this post will never be useful to you, but it may save you days of debugging. How do I fix rare graphics bugs without going insane? My game flashes randomly. Once every few minutes. In a single frame, some of the mesh looks stretched to its limits. One frame later, everything is back to normal. It is not predictable. It happens only on specific hardware. I reinstalled the drivers, and the issue was still there, just harder to reproduce. QA can reproduce it, but not reliably, because there is no quick repro. Players also report things like "random light flashes". Sounds fun? God forbid - familiar? My record for solving one bug like this is 2 months... Yup... Repro was taking from 20 minutes to a full day. Yes - occasionally just one faulty frame during a full day of work. It caused JUST A FEW sleepless nights. But it made me really rethink the process of fixing such issues. After this "incident", I developed a friendlier workflow for battling such issues: ✅ Automated repro and detection When the bug appears once every 5 minutes in 60FPS rendering, it is only a single frame out of 18,000. Relying on your eyes to catch that is just silly - strong delulu. At least my brain tends to hallucinate the issue after 1 hour of staring at the screen. Automated repro and issue detection are absolutely crucial. You will thank yourself for spending additional time to implement that. Please do this, use some compute shaders, additional passes - whatever. But do this 🙏 ✅ Divide and conquer Tool for disabling/enabling a group of objects or individual features. My goal is to identify exactly what part of the project contributes to the issue. I want to find an individual object or a feature that creates the issue. ✅ Inspect the object/feature/shader My goal is to narrow down the source of the problem to the individual function/variable. Binary search individual renderer settings or pipeline state settings. Fix undefined behaviors. Implement extensive sanity checks for invalid values and race conditions. Comment out individual shader features. I usually find the source of the issue at this point ✅ Custom in-shader error reporting Add a persistent buffer (UAV) or render target and append the error messages from the faulty shader code to inspect its behavior when the issue is detected. Inspect the buffer values using the frame debugger. ✅ Fix the issue and report it. Fix it and document it. And when it is an issue with the engine/driver, please report it and implement a temporary workaround. Save other developers from sleepless nights. Some issues I faced in the past: - Constant buffers in Unity returning garbage data in individual frames - Depth test on an individual object was corrupting the depth buffer - Hardware target clear was corrupting the texture data completely, also breaking the next draws. Using fullscreen shader to clear fixed the issue Remember to bookmark this post. You never know when your team will face an issue like this
