Jörn Dinkla liked thisJörn Dinkla liked thisThe godfather of computer programming theory, the legendary Donald Knuth, found out that Claude could solve an algorithmic generalisation problem he was working on, prompting him to revise his previous judgment on LLMs: "Shock! Shock! I learned yesterday that an open problem I'd been working on for several weeks had just been solved by Claude Opus 4.6—Anthropic's hybrid reasoning model that had been released three weeks earlier! It seems that I'll have to revise my opinions about "generative AI" one of these days." If you search with Google, you will find the transcription of an extraordinary mail exchange with Stephen Wolfram on GPT where Knuth was rather critical (to use an euphemism) about the usefulness of these new AI systems... He now thinks he may have to change his mind: "I think Claude Shannon's spirit is probably proud to know that his name is now being associated with such advances. Hats off to Claude!" (BTW, he is almost 90 and still working hard on formal proofs to prepare a new edition of The Art of Computer Programming!!) It's the third movie in my series: first Beads, then Gas Town, and now The Wasteland -- A Thousand Gas Towns. The biggest and best federated work system the world has ever seen. Huge hats off and congratulations to the Wasteland team, including Matt Beane, Julian Knutsen, Chris Sells, Timothy Sehn, and Brendan Hopper. This all-star team helped me get the Wasteland designed, built, and launched. Jörn Dinkla liked thisJörn Dinkla liked thisHeute durfte ich die Opening Keynote auf den Hamburger IT-Strategietagen halten. Ein Moment, der mir viel bedeutet hat und eine Gelegenheit, die ich bewusst genutzt habe. Meine Botschaft: Deutschland ist in weiten Teilen vom Builder zum Betreiber geworden. Aber wir können das ändern. Wir lizenzieren, implementieren, administrieren. Aber wir bauen zu selten noch selbst neue digitale Wertschöpfung. Wir haben uns in Abhängigkeiten eingerichtet, von Plattformen, von Anbietern, von anderen, die die eigentlichen Entscheidungen treffen. Das sollte irritieren. Denn es ist eine Wahl. Und wir können sie anders treffen. Die CIO-Community hat dafür die Kraft. Wir können Abhängigkeiten abbauen, unsere Engineering-Kompetenz nutzen und Tempo machen. Das haben wir in der Vergangenheit bewiesen und einige Leuchttürme zeigen es erneut: STACKIT, Soofi, die Quantencomputing-Forschung hier in Hamburg. Auch bei OTTO wird dieser Anspruch mit unserer Transformation ins AI-Zeitalter konkret. Der Wandel kommt nicht von allein. Aber er kommt, wenn wir ihn treiben. Ich hoffe, dass diese Community heute bei den Hamburger IT-Strategietagen genau das in Gang setzt.
