The work is often behind the scenes. The impact is everywhere. Our custodial teams care for the spaces where MSU students learn, employees work, researchers make discoveries and our campus community comes together every day. Their work starts long before many of us arrive and continues throughout the day, from routine cleaning and daily upkeep to responding when a space needs extra attention. It’s work that can be easy to overlook when everything is running the way it should. That’s part of what makes it so important. Today, we’re taking a moment to recognize the people who help keep our campus clean, welcoming and ready for the day ahead. Thank you to our custodial staff for everything you do for MSU! #CustodialWorkersRecognitionDay #MSUIPF

Nine days. 115 buildings. A campus-wide effort to restore critical infrastructure. When the T.B. Simon Power Plant experienced a power outage on Sept. 19, the impact reached far beyond the plant itself. Steam service was disrupted across Michigan State University's East Lansing campus, affecting academic buildings, research spaces, residence halls and other campus facilities. Behind the scenes, Infrastructure Planning and Facilities (IPF) teams went to work. Restoring steam to a campus the size and complexity of MSU isn't as simple as turning a system back on. Teams had to assess infrastructure, coordinate across campus, work through the restoration plan and bring buildings back online safely and methodically. And they did it while campus kept moving. Classes continued. Students returned to their residence halls. Research continued. Dining and athletics continued. The day-to-day work of the university continued while IPF crews worked behind the scenes to restore the systems that make that activity possible. By Sept. 27, steam had been restored to 100 of the 115 impacted buildings, representing 91% of impacted residents. On Sept. 28, steam service was restored to all impacted buildings. This was a campus-wide effort involving the people who plan, operate, maintain and respond to the infrastructure behind MSU every day. Nine days of restoration. Thousands of people counting on the work getting done. And a team working behind the scenes to help keep campus moving.
