Good Day Grocery. We Buffalove helping our youth (and city) grow!
About us
Good Day Grocery is a Buffalo-based mutual aid project making sure students and families have more than just food – they have dignity. Launched in 2020 inside a Buffalo public high school, Good Day Grocery began as a simple idea: if kids are already at school, school should be one of the safest places to get what they need. What started with teachers and community members quietly filling gaps for students has grown into a citywide effort to support school-based food pantries, “share fridges,” and community food programs with the extra items that are often missing from shelves. Today, Good Day Grocery: Supports local food pantries (including sites like Provisions 139 and school-based pantries) with hygiene products, cleaning supplies, and other dignity-based essentials. Boosts school- and youth-run projects such as free grocery stores and pantries that allow students to access food and home essentials at no cost. Creates youth-centered service opportunities so Buffalo students can earn their New York State graduation-required 20 hours of community service while directly caring for their neighbors. Runs targeted mutual aid drives (like winter glove campaigns) where every purchased item goes straight into the hands of local youth and families. Our work is built on a simple belief: when kids feel seen, supported, and cared for in practical ways, they are more ready to learn, lead, and thrive. Good Day Grocery is currently a mutual aid initiative operated by volunteers and is not yet a registered nonprofit; donations are not tax-deductible at this time. We are actively working toward securing nonprofit status in Summer 2025 to expand our impact, deepen partnerships, and create even more opportunities for Buffalo youth to serve their own community. We know our community cares for kids. Good Day Grocery is how we show them just how much. 👉 To partner, host a drive, or support our work, connect with us here on LinkedIn!

In 2 days the 250 hats and gloves we assembled for our friends are gone! Can you help us get more? In our 98% “free lunch” school, many youngsters don’t have the winter weather gear they need to warmly wait for the bus—or school— doors) to open. Students continue to go to recess outside— whether or not they have the appropriate winter weather gear. We’ve received a specific request for Pre-K sized gloves as well as adult-sized items for the older kids. We’d love to continue the positive support for our peers— but we need your help! Would you be so kind as to check out our #wishlist in the comments? All items go directly to youth in need! Let’s go #buffalo and show the students of School 45 we care! ❤️ (This is a student-run project, please help our kids grow into the next community leaders!)

This Thanksgiving, I’m asking for a very specific kind of “thank you” to Buffalo kids. 💙🧤 I am Rachel Kent, Founder of the Good Day Grocery, a small mutual aid project I started while students were on remote learning. I saw kids across my camera hungry and without what they needed-- so I began to deliver it to their homes. Then, when students returned to in-person learning right after the pandemic, I saw kids coming to school without basic essentials-- and I couldn’t unsee it. So I began quietly filling gaps-- gloves, snacks, hygiene items-- so students could focus on learning, not just surviving the day. What I was doing didn't stay quiet for long-- and soon I was rallying staff to host a hygiene item drive, supporting over 40 families with daily dignity essentials. This sprouted into a student-run program that was lauded by Lead4Change as a Community Impact leader in New York State and student founders received accolades from the Buffalo Mayor's Office for their work to support their community. I'm proud to say the Good Deed Grocery is growing into a second school in the Buffalo City School District, and I’m inviting my network to jump in with me to help celebrate. I’ve created an Amazon list where every item ships directly to our program and goes straight into the hands of Buffalo youth. Right now, we’re focused on simple, high-impact items like winter gloves and blankets so kids can sleep well at night and wait for the bus and walk to school with warm hands and a little more dignity. If you’ve been looking for a tangible way to give back this season, here it is: 1- Choose an item from the list 2- Check out (Amazon ships it directly to me) 3- Know that a Buffalo student will be warmer and more supported because of you Mutual aid is neighbors taking care of neighbors—no red tape, no overhead, just care. If you can’t purchase right now, a share or repost is a huge help. Thank you for helping Buffalo youth have “a good day, every day.” 👉 Amazon Wish List is in the comments! #givingtuesday #clearthelist #wny #buffalo
