Hearings

A committee is permitted to organise a hearing with experts, where this is considered essential to its work on a particular subject. Hearings can also be held jointly by two or more committees. Most committees organise regular hearings, as they allow them to hear from experts and hold discussions on the key issues. On 1st October 2026, the Committee on Development (DEVE) and the Subcommittee on Tax Matters (FISC) organised a public hearing, bringing together Members and experts from the OECD, the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF), and civil society (Christian Aid Ireland), to discuss how to promote fair taxation and how to combat tax-related illicit financial flows, as part of the fight against inequalities in developing countries.

EU lawmakers held a joint public hearing on how organised crime exploits weaknesses in the EU’s Single Market to commit VAT and customs fraud. The hearing brought together the European Parliament’s Committee on Budgetary Control, Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection, and Subcommittee on Tax Matters.
